My domain is live, with a decent little site if I do say so myself :) I used a site called weebly which is a lot like iWeb, but for me it's easier...not sure everyone would agree with that. It's still a work in progress, but check it out if you like: filthEdesign fine art & design by emily eakes

getting a passport for a minor child under 16, the drama

Didn't know there'd be drama. I've been married to my husband for nearly 3 years, together for 7 and the only dad that my 15 year old son really knows. So the boy was accepted to a sister city exchange trip with scholarship to Japan this summer. He had to fill out an application, provide 2 letters of reference and go through an interview with 2 members of the city committee. Pretty big deal IMO. We found out in October that he was accepted and in November we learned we received a scholarship to help pay for the trip - awesome :). So in January, we went to the post office to apply for the boy's passport. He had his birth certificate and picture ID (took drivers ed last summer) and my husband and I filled out the application...we waited our turn and sat down. Then we learned that the father's signature has to be the "father" listed on the birth certificate. It's a LOOOONNNNNGGGGG story that I'm not sure I want to fully go in to here, but despite the

Point of View

I used to have a livejournal (still do, just don't update it anymore) and it was much more of a journal, where as this is a blog and in my head that distinction is personal vs. business which is perhaps why I don't really have a voice from which I write this blog. I posted daily design back in the winter...when I had time for such things. I post photos as I move about my world and occasionally I string some words together...about something or another. I'm an artist. A visual artist. I primarily make fine art prints—linoleum blocks, intimately sized. My most recent series was the alphabet. I have donated an installation of the piece to KCAI for the art and design auction. I think this is a perfect venue to display the work. It belongs in a gallery and not behind a table at an arts & crafts fair. I'm not sure I'm done with the series, but I'm not sure where it goes from here either. I've seen some amazing work lately at the Lawrence Art Center and other

OMG the updates I should make...

Topics ranging from KCAI Art & Design Auction to getting a passport for my 15 year old kid to finding out the trip may be off to learning it's only with nearly 1/2 the kids who were originally accepted into the program. Oh and there was local hail and tornado activity recently and my day job is just turning into a bit of a nightmare... And then my postcard for my dentist appointment came in plenty of time and so I called this morning to reschedule since it was in the middle of my kid's 9th grade recognition ceremony tomorrow. Turns out it was actually today! and I called to reschedule about 10 minutes into what would have been the appointment...yeah, the least interesting story to tell, but the one that takes the least amount of effort :) I'll save the rest for later! enjoy the day...

Pegby is a great tool for organization, for collaboration and personal use

I've used it and it's great. I have to make lots of lists to keep myself organized...crossing things off my list or moving them to the "done" list is good stuff :) I also manage a lot of creative projects in my day job and this would be a great tool for my team. You should check out Pegby too :) Pegby - online organizational tool that is highly collaborative

filthEdesign.com 1.0 is live!

filthEdesign.com is my domain. There are many like it, but this one is mine... :P Full Metal Jacket is a great flick... :) Anyway, I've had it since August 2010 and have been trying to figure out wordpress on occasion and without any luck. My husband recent got a new job and part of the job is web design and he's decent in dreamweaver but had been working with some HTML email template sites and in the process discovered iWeb...something both of us have on our machines, yet never touched. Now we have and O_M_G_it's_buttah! I put up a countdown clock to March 1st. Also an email link, blog link and etsy link. I hope to use iWeb to put together a gallery/portfolio site...on my freaking awesome domain :) I CAN'T WAIT!!! :)

The Art of Good

I hope SPRING is 'nigh...I'm feeling good and I want to get out! I haven't been creating art lately, but I've had a decent amount of freelance work (for someone who had zero freelance work 2 months ago!) and while I enjoy the fine art just a tad more than the design, the design sadly pays better. Though ultimately not sad since I'm getting paid and mostly not sacrificing style or point of view. The good news is I think I have a venue/show for an assemblage piece (ceramics and found objects, etc.)! Very exciting because I have a surprisingly large body of work from oil paintings to ceramics to printmaking...and a lot of it I've never shown outside my home :) To be continued... The boy needs a ride home from swim practice...

Image
Boyer | Therapist business card design Originally uploaded by filthEdesign I designed these cards for a friend from high school. She is a licensed therapist and wanted new and fun cards for the new year. She recently opened up shop on her own, a big risk, but I think she's doing well :) The price of the die and set-up put this out of budget, but she loves the purple sofa and so do I :) wish it wasn't so expensive!

backyard farmers | daily logo design Originally uploaded by filthEdesign Can't remember if I posted this one already. It was inspired by the notion of the political...referencing Obama's logo for the 2008 campaign. Backyard Farmers is not necessarily about changing the world, but it's still a bit of a social message.

ivf connections | daily logo design

Image
ivf connections | daily logo design Originally uploaded by filthEdesign Fertility has never been an issue in my world, unless it's the issue of being too fertile. I have only love for and zero regrets regarding my only biological offspring...but if I were to have any more kids, they'd be adopted, no doubt. And I've never had trouble getting pregnant so I can't imagine what it's like to want something so bad and not be able to have it...but I also never planned on being a parent so there's a whole lot about an IVF scenario that I can't imagine...I'm sympathetic, but I am also a big believer in family is what you make it. I don't think biology has much to do with it at all... AAAAAAaaaanyway :) this is a losing logo design for a 99 designs contest and my sister (mother of twins) said that the idea of 3 may not resonate so well with IVF seeking folks...I can definitely see that and it was really more about the cuteness of the peas than the notion o

Wii Fit Plus - do you use it?

Anybody out there use a Wii Fit for an actual workout schedule? With health and weight loss in mind as the goal? This Midwestern Snowpocalypse is killing me! Add that on top of a December that was spent with a ridiculous sickness...and I need to workout! I was solidly running (using the term loosely but still) 25-30 miles a week. And since Thanksgiving I've maybe run a total of 8 miles...and I am not in a position to join a gym, plus they're just not practical. One reason I like running is because the only equipment you need is a pair of good shoes....and really, good is subjective. But I guess that isn't entirely true since I have shoes but I'm not running. Anyway, just want to hear from people who genuinely use the Wii Fit for exercise...

bailoz proof | daily logo design

Image
bailoz proof | daily logo design Originally uploaded by filthEdesign This was one of a set of five concepts I shared with my client. They didn't choose it, but I love it :) There are a lot of faceted fonts out there, but I'm particularly loving Gotham these days (I know so is everybody else) so I faceted it myself and used coloring based on my emerald design posted a few weeks ago.

filda tires | daily logo design

Image
filda tires | daily logo design Originally uploaded by filthEdesign oh, ya know...giving 99 designs a try again. i got cocky with the freelance work i've been doing. but the reality is, a creative brief that you can work on WITH the client and a back and forth to develop the design is not something that a contest site can provide. and then of course you're dealing with people who don't know how to talk about design or what they want or like or don't like in design terms so you get feedback like "not what we're looking for".....um...okay, gonna give me a clue as to what you ARE looking for then? will it occur to them that if no one is providing anything close to what they want that maybe it's their brief and inability to communicate that is the problem...not the designers? though at some point someone will stumble up on it, supply the magic "right answer" and they'll feel vindicated for all the non-feedback they gave...oh well, know thy

TRX I - v3 | daily logo design

Image
TRX I - v3 Originally uploaded by filthEdesign This was a later iteration that I really liked. The business name is TRX Integration and the "i" of integration is literally integrated into the X in addition to all the letters that form the graphic being integrated together to for a strong graphic. I can also see it's a little too abstract for most and I think it would take a strategic marketing team to really make the brand :) regardless, it's a nice one for my portfolio :)
