Yes, he leaves for Japan at the end of the month...but he was invited to join a summer class through the KU Confucious Center to begin learning Mandarin Chinese :)

After installing our new front door, I painted the inside with chalkboard paint and Saturday, John conditioned it and left us this note :)

My domain is live, with a decent little site if I do say so myself :)

I used a site called weebly which is a lot like iWeb, but for me it's easier...not sure everyone would agree with that.

It's still a work in progress, but check it out if you like:

getting a passport for a minor child under 16, the drama

Didn't know there'd be drama. I've been married to my husband for nearly 3 years, together for 7 and the only dad that my 15 year old son really knows. So the boy was accepted to a sister city exchange trip with scholarship to Japan this summer. He had to fill out an application, provide 2 letters of reference and go through an interview with 2 members of the city committee. Pretty big deal IMO. We found out in October that he was accepted and in November we learned we received a scholarship to help pay for the trip - awesome :). So in January, we went to the post office to apply for the boy's passport. He had his birth certificate and picture ID (took drivers ed last summer) and my husband and I filled out the application...we waited our turn and sat down. Then we learned that the father's signature has to be the "father" listed on the birth certificate. It's a LOOOONNNNNGGGGG story that I'm not sure I want to fully go in to here, but despite the fact that baby daddy forgot his ID the day the boy was born and wasn't initially on the birth certificate, he is now. And he hadn't seen the boy since he was 6. And I'd heard stories (his daughter from another mother found me on facebook) about him living with his sister, his father before he died, on the streets, but hadn't talked to him.

So I fill out the new passport app. with only my information and an explanation about why the baby daddy was not available to sign...that despite legal joint custody, he was not in my child's life. About 2 months later we receive a letter asking for more detail, I send the court records for child support and the actual child support payment record. Both show inaction for many years.

Then a month or more later I get a letter saying they need a court order! I fah-reaked the f**k out. It was $1750 for a step-parent adoption and then I found someone who could fill out papers and I could file myself, but there was no way at this point to get a court date before we had to buy tickets and without a court date I had no idea if the judge would even agree that my kid should be able to travel without his bio-dad's signature.

Talked to several lawyers and was learning the fastest way to get this done would be to google baby daddy and see if I could get a notarized signature on an affidavit. I'd searched before and never found recent anything, but this time he was actually on facebook, I write him a msg. Last I heard he was homeless so I'm guessing he's not camping out under bridges or sleeping in shelters with a laptop or smart phone.

Anyway, one day goes by, no response...but the second day he responds! I think OMG this could actually work! Days were passing by, we were already in May now and 2 weeks away from the date to buy plane tickets. He said he would be happy to sign but had no ID for a notary...are you effing kidding me?!?! I offer to buy his ID, give him a ride to the dmv and the notary...ANYthing to make it so the reason my kid missed the trip was NOT because of a signature from a man who is irrelevant!

Then no'd been nearly a week now...didn't know if I was going to hear from him again and in the meantime learned court was absolutely not going to work in the now 1 week I had left...

So yeah, I spent that Monday on the phone with lawyers, courts, the passport office in New Orleans, law professors at KU, everyone...and I sent the program coordinator an email and said we'd have to pull out of the trip there was no way that he could get his passport in time for the trip...

I was spent...I cried the whole way home, you know that cry where you cry with your whole body, gasping for air, angry, sad, hurt...

I got home and for some unknown reason the boy checked the mail that day (he never does, his generation has no idea the joy of receiving actual mail in your mailbox) and you will not believe it, but his passport arrived!

Clerical error? I have no idea, but the letter asking for court documents must have been sent before they received my documentation showing baby daddy hadn't been involved for 7+ years...OMG! At that point I started crying again! I couldn't believe it! I had done it! A passport for MY minor child under 16! In our hands! I couldn't believe it was real :) but it was...being the parent for 15 years, being there, being engaged, paying for everything, working my ass off, it worked! I was the parent with the rights and the ability to decide!

What a f**king trial I tell ya...then of course there was a chance the trip would be called off for radiation leakage as a result of the earthquake...OMG! They are going this year, we're confident in the decision. There are only 12 kids instead of the usual 20, but I feel good about it and I know the other parents who decided this was a good time to go, do too...

Point of View

I used to have a livejournal (still do, just don't update it anymore) and it was much more of a journal, where as this is a blog and in my head that distinction is personal vs. business which is perhaps why I don't really have a voice from which I write this blog. I posted daily design back in the winter...when I had time for such things. I post photos as I move about my world and occasionally I string some words together...about something or another.

I'm an artist. A visual artist. I primarily make fine art prints—linoleum blocks, intimately sized. My most recent series was the alphabet. I have donated an installation of the piece to KCAI for the art and design auction. I think this is a perfect venue to display the work. It belongs in a gallery and not behind a table at an arts & crafts fair. I'm not sure I'm done with the series, but I'm not sure where it goes from here either. I've seen some amazing work lately at the Lawrence Art Center and other venues and I want to create again. I'm being drawn to nature (it certainly sells better than conceptual or cerebral pieces). But to do nature, you have to do it better than anyone else...or have a point of view that is interesting and new...because the "go-to" subject matter for hobbyists is landscape, there's a ton of it and most of it is blah to bad...

But lately I've been focused on design, freelance work. It pays so much better than fine art, but it's not consistent. I was overwhelmed with my day job—the job was transitioning from designer/art director to project manager/gatekeeper/info gatherer. And the latter, I have zero interest in. I was working day and night to try to keep hold of the design, but it's been made clear that I'm not needed in that position, except for powerpoints (news flash—ppt is not design) and the occasional internal logo. But I find my design work and skills/talent as a designer are being marginalized when I'm given 1 hour to create a logo. Or the same amount of time to put any design piece together.

I could go on forever...but I need to get more work done...for the day job...a part of me wants to get "dooced" which is why I'm publishing this at all.

OMG the updates I should make...

Topics ranging from KCAI Art & Design Auction to getting a passport for my 15 year old kid to finding out the trip may be off to learning it's only with nearly 1/2 the kids who were originally accepted into the program. Oh and there was local hail and tornado activity recently and my day job is just turning into a bit of a nightmare... And then my postcard for my dentist appointment came in plenty of time and so I called this morning to reschedule since it was in the middle of my kid's 9th grade recognition ceremony tomorrow. Turns out it was actually today! and I called to reschedule about 10 minutes into what would have been the appointment...yeah, the least interesting story to tell, but the one that takes the least amount of effort :)

I'll save the rest for later!
enjoy the day...

Pegby is a great tool for organization, for collaboration and personal use

I've used it and it's great. I have to make lots of lists to keep myself organized...crossing things off my list or moving them to the "done" list is good stuff :) I also manage a lot of creative projects in my day job and this would be a great tool for my team.

You should check out Pegby too :)

There are many like it, but this one is mine... :P Full Metal Jacket is a great flick... :) Anyway, I've had it since August 2010 and have been trying to figure out wordpress on occasion and without any luck. My husband recent got a new job and part of the job is web design and he's decent in dreamweaver but had been working with some HTML email template sites and in the process discovered iWeb...something both of us have on our machines, yet never touched. Now we have and O_M_G_it's_buttah!

I put up a countdown clock to March 1st. Also an email link, blog link and etsy link. I hope to use iWeb to put together a gallery/portfolio site...on my freaking awesome domain :) I CAN'T WAIT!!! :)

The Art of Good

I hope SPRING is 'nigh...I'm feeling good and I want to get out!

I haven't been creating art lately, but I've had a decent amount of freelance work (for someone who had zero freelance work 2 months ago!) and while I enjoy the fine art just a tad more than the design, the design sadly pays better. Though ultimately not sad since I'm getting paid and mostly not sacrificing style or point of view.

The good news is I think I have a venue/show for an assemblage piece (ceramics and found objects, etc.)! Very exciting because I have a surprisingly large body of work from oil paintings to ceramics to printmaking...and a lot of it I've never shown outside my home :)

To be continued...
The boy needs a ride home from swim practice...

I designed these cards for a friend from high school. She is a licensed therapist and wanted new and fun cards for the new year. She recently opened up shop on her own, a big risk, but I think she's doing well :)

The price of the die and set-up put this out of budget, but she loves the purple sofa and so do I :) wish it wasn't so expensive!

Fertility has never been an issue in my world, unless it's the issue of being too fertile. I have only love for and zero regrets regarding my only biological offspring...but if I were to have any more kids, they'd be adopted, no doubt. And I've never had trouble getting pregnant so I can't imagine what it's like to want something so bad and not be able to have it...but I also never planned on being a parent so there's a whole lot about an IVF scenario that I can't imagine...I'm sympathetic, but I am also a big believer in family is what you make it. I don't think biology has much to do with it at all...

AAAAAAaaaanyway :) this is a losing logo design for a 99 designs contest and my sister (mother of twins) said that the idea of 3 may not resonate so well with IVF seeking folks...I can definitely see that and it was really more about the cuteness of the peas than the notion of triplets! :) ah well, can't win 'em all :)

Wii Fit Plus - do you use it?

Anybody out there use a Wii Fit for an actual workout schedule? With health and weight loss in mind as the goal? This Midwestern Snowpocalypse is killing me! Add that on top of a December that was spent with a ridiculous sickness...and I need to workout! I was solidly running (using the term loosely but still) 25-30 miles a week. And since Thanksgiving I've maybe run a total of 8 miles...and I am not in a position to join a gym, plus they're just not practical. One reason I like running is because the only equipment you need is a pair of good shoes....and really, good is subjective. But I guess that isn't entirely true since I have shoes but I'm not running. Anyway, just want to hear from people who genuinely use the Wii Fit for exercise...

oh, ya 99 designs a try again. i got cocky with the freelance work i've been doing. but the reality is, a creative brief that you can work on WITH the client and a back and forth to develop the design is not something that a contest site can provide. and then of course you're dealing with people who don't know how to talk about design or what they want or like or don't like in design terms so you get feedback like "not what we're looking for", gonna give me a clue as to what you ARE looking for then? will it occur to them that if no one is providing anything close to what they want that maybe it's their brief and inability to communicate that is the problem...not the designers? though at some point someone will stumble up on it, supply the magic "right answer" and they'll feel vindicated for all the non-feedback they gave...oh well, know thyself i guess, i should NOT be doing contests! :D
