Flower Blox (tulip-detail)

Image
tulip-detail Originally uploaded by filthEdesign This is comprised of 16 blocks of pine wood that are 3.5" x 3.5" and adhered together in a 14" x 14" mosaic of xerox caulk photo transfers, I took the image one spring and manipulated it in photoshop to make the red pop nad the green deep. There are translucent areas in the caulk that show the wood - it's kind of hard to explain :) But it has a really rich look to it, the caulk sounds like a weird medium, but it's so cool - there are imperfections due to the caulk and the handmade nature of the piece, but they add to the overall piece. You can see more shots in my filthEdesign Etsy shop .

But alas, the day job owns me for quite a few more hours.... EDIT: Image was removed due to economy of space on my Flickr page...I will be posting an image of the ornament dresses that will be for sale at the LOLA Giant Indie, Handmade, Local Art Fair & Sale December 11 & 12, Lawrence, KS

Oshop | daily logo design

Image
Oshop | daily logo design Originally uploaded by filthEdesign The only feedback the contest holder had to offer was "read the brief"...and this was after I read the brief and said in my comments I'd read the brief.... The designs fit the briefs (as they were written/edited)...they may not have liked the designs, but "read the brief" is not helpful feedback - try telling me why you don't think they fit the brief...because if I think they do and explain why and you think they don't but explain nothing, then YOU have a communication issue, dear contest holder....have I mentioned I shouldn't do design contests :)

LOLA Giant Vendor Profile: filthEdesign by Emily Eakes

Image
Working from her home studio in Lawrence, Emily Eakes crafts "hand-carved, hand-printed, hand-embroidered, signed and ready to hang original artworks for the 21st century woman." Subtle and subversive, Eakes' work combines traditional printmaking with images of stereotypical "women's work" to create thought-provoking home decor pieces. "I'm inspired by culture and by the notion that what for some is bad and wrong, for others is good and normal," Eakes said. "I like making beautiful things that are subtly subversive." my market 4 | daily logo design

Image
my market 4 Originally uploaded by filthEdesign This was my final submittal based on their desire for upscale. They gave me positive feedback all along and I don't go into a contest expecting to win, but of course I'd like to and try to. It was a really disappointing contest because they picked a winner that was almost a pixel for pixel rip-off of the "sample logo" they shared in their brief. And with this contest, I don't think the holder understood - my disappointment wasn't because I didn't win, it was because they chose a copy as the winner. It's like, if you want me to copy an existing logo, you should really state that upfront instead of wasting my time and creativity when I (and many of the other contributors) try to actually update, freshen up, DESIGN a NEW logo for you instead of copying an existing logo. Thanks.

off our chests | daily logo design Originally uploaded by filthEdesign loved the bleeding cowboy font use on this one and the sort of propaganda influence... another 99designs contest, the contest holder really didn't much care for my style I don't think :)

papillon | daily logo design

Image
papillon logo design 1 Originally uploaded by filthEdesign The contest holder asked the designers to consider Papillon, the character - a real man who was sent to prison in French Guiana and escaped, numerous times and he was called Papillon because of his butterfly tattoo. The logo was for an upscale Manhattan (NYC) bistro. I chose to consider the bow tie as the butterfly and give it a sharp sort of retro feel. I don't think the contest holder got it, but that's how it goes sometimes.

whatchamakeofit logo design contest Originally uploaded by filthEdesign I really shouldn't do logo contests...I seem to come in second...a lot...I think people like to dabble in the unconventional, but they're afraid to primarily exist in that space...

it's sew easy | design of the day

it's sew easy Originally uploaded by filthEdesign or daily logo design or the like :) This was a submission to a contest for a PBS sewing show. I'd love to win this one considering the embroidery and sewing I incorporate into some of my fine art work...

daily logo design

Image
esquire magazine Originally uploaded by filthEdesign I have recently started entering logo design contests on 99designs and thought this might be a great way to start a "daily design" or daily logo design post. The brief for this design was to transform or reinvent the Esquire Magazine logo. It's similar to the existing logo, but with the gun shot to dot the "i" - ready, aim, fire...at the existing paradigm :)
