Layla McEniry has been running Sweetcakes in Lawrence, KS for the last few years after working in the restaurant/bakery industry off and on for 15 years. Sweetcakes makes cakes, cupcakes and other tempting goodies for occasions of all kinds. You will never find over-the-top fondant covered cakes at Sweetcakes as Layla prefers using all-natural, local and organic ingredients in her delicious creations. Layla was born in Oshkosh, WI and spent the first five years of her life touring state parks with her hippie parents in a yellow VW bus. They settled in Lawrence and Layla is proud to call herself a townie! She is married and raising a teenager daughter. Working from her home studio in Lawrence, Emily Eakes crafts "hand-carved, hand-printed, hand-embroidered, signed and ready to hang original artworks for the 21st century woman." Subtle and subversive, Eakes' work combines traditional printmaking with images of stereotypical "women's work" to create thought-provoking home decor pieces. "I'm inspired by culture and by the notion that what for some is bad and wrong, for others is good and normal," Eakes said. "I like making beautiful things that are subtly subversive." Art in the Park this weekend - Lawrence, KS at beautiful downtown South Park 10am to 5pm, Sunday, May 2nd. Over 130 vendors - great gifts for Mothers Day or anytime. If you're in the area, stop by and support local art! Saturday, May 1st - 1st swim meet of the summer long course season. First swim meet with our new team. First time we will be in the same place as our former team - I hope everyone remains respectful and positive. I have enough drama in my life without the swim team getting deep in it. Though the reality is, to us it's a swim team, to the coaches it's their livelihood and we know what it's like to lose and we have pretty strong feelings about supporting people we believe in. Just found out my sister in law has cancer - pretty crazy. It's hard for me to get too worried because I just can't believe an otherwise healthy 36 year old woman could actually die of cancer. It's not stage 1, but it's not stage 4 either - plus it's 2010, sure...

i'm so excited! i'm taking a week off of work at my "day job" as a graphic designer to make art! :) i have an art fair - the ric rac roundup - november 19th at californos put on by bon bon atelier . and i plan to spend the next week preparing. my kid has a swim meet this weekend and i'll be officiating as a stroke and turn judge so the weekend won't be very flexible...but i do also hope to see an old friend play music at a local coffee shop saturday evening :) then sunday night i'm going to clean the kitchen, a.k.a. my studio, and monday morning i'm going to wake up and print! and print! and print some more! alphabet print cards maybe even 33 1/3 rpm blocks maybe even domestic | domesticated blocks and i'm going to prep them to sell...OUT! :) i'm hoping to earn xmas money :) so cross your fingers. i'm also applying to an art show/sale in lawrence for 12/20 - could be a nice last minute cash influx...and i'm going to get my submittals ...

anyone local to lawrence, ks? or close enough for me to make a morning's drive to get to you (from lawrence)? do you have a canopy i can borrow? my space is 10'x 10' but the canopy doesn't have to be that big. ideally something people can walk up-right in :) and something w/o netting or netting that can be disappeared essentially :) the fair date is 5/3, a sunday. i could pay you a small rental fee. please comment here or e-mail me at filthedesign at gmail dot com

hoop_gun Originally uploaded by m_mle hoping to start the embroidery this weekend...i need more frames...and michael's does not appear to be restocking the many items that i have bought them out of...eyelets, hook and eye closures, 9" and 10" embroidery hoops... but i think i'm about finished with the printing portion of my art fair booth preparation and ready to start assembling everything... my hands will be aching soon from all the sewing and embroidery and grommeting left to do...but exciting to see so much of my work in one place at a time. wish i'd had my sh*t together this well in college :) age and experience reveal what one is capable of...
